Finding the perfect gift is never easy, whether it’s for a friend’s birthday, a wedding or a baby shower. And as the leaves continue to fall and the days get shorter—the countdown to the winter holidays and gift-giving will begin before you know it.

Luckily for you Halifax is full of awesome independent gift shops offering alternative and unique gifting ideas for all occasions!

Check out my list of the best places to buy locally crafted gifts in the Halifax region.

  1. Jennifer’s of Nova Scotia

Located on one of Halifax’s most vibrant streets, Jennifer’s of Nova Scotia is a family owned shop. They’ve been in business since 1978 and proudly sell products that are 100 per cent handcrafted by local artisans from Atlantic Canada.

This is a store where you’ll have no problem finding the perfect gift for that special someone.

5635 Spring Garden Rd., Downtown Halifax

  1. Kept Shop

This is one of my favourite stores in Downtown Dartmouth and one of the best places in the Halifax area to buy gifts for your loved ones—or yourself. Items sold at Kept are sourced both locally and internationally and include everything from home decor, jewelry, paper goods, children’s clothing and toys, and much more. So hop on the ferry, grab a coffee from Two If By Sea and explore what Kept has to offer.

*Please note: Kept has recently relocated from Portland Street in Dartmouth to King Street—a few blocks closer to the Alderney Landing Ferry Terminal than its previous Portland Street location.

75 King St., Downtown Dartmouth

  1. Bogside Gallery Fine Crafts of Atlantic Canada

Bogside Gallery can be found nestled away in the Hydrostone Market, one of Nova Scotia’s most historic neighbourhoods.

The Hydrostone District was built after the Halifax Explosion in 1917. Today, the Hydrostone Market has become a vibrant area with unique and charming shops and restaurants.

5527 Young St., North End Halifax

  1. Made in the Maritimes Artisan Boutique

Located in Sunnyside Mall, Made in the Maritimes is a local-minded shop that’s mission is to promote the arts and foster entrepreneurship and small business growth in the Maritimes.

All of the items they sell are 100 per cent handcrafted in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick or Prince Edward Island.  Items sold at Made in the Maritimes range from pottery, cards, woodworks, houseware, photography and much more.

1595 Bedford Hwy., Bedford

  1. Dots & Loops Handmade

Dots & Loops is a curated gifts and goods shop you’ll fall in love with the second you set foot into the store. It’s located approximately 45 minutes from downtown Halifax in Lunenburg, a beautiful seaside town.

While you should never need an excuse to take a drive to the town of Lunenburg, Dots & Loops is a great reason to make the short trek. If you aren’t able to make it down, you can also purchase items from their online store!

183 Lincoln St., Lunenburg

Be sure to check out your local markets like the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market and the Alderney Landing Farmers Market for other great gifts and local treasures.
