Five Spring/Summer Fun Runs in the Halifax region!
One sure-fire sign of spring in Halifax is the Bluenose Marathon. The sight of over 13,000 people running this town during the Victoria Day weekend is sure to put a smile on your face and make you look forward to being active outside again.
Why not challenge yourself this spring or summer by participating in a running event or race? You don’t have to be a professional runner, or even a runner at all! There are lots of options for every age and fitness level happening throughout both seasons.
Here are just five run runs to check out while the sun shines:
This 5k race raises funds for the Hillside Wesleyan Haiti Missions and takes place on the scenic Salt Marsh trail system in Cole Harbour. If you prefer a shorter route, there is also a 2.5k option and participants are welcome to run or walk depending on their preference. There is even a free 5k training program on the website for anyone who needs help preparing!
Event date: May 28, 2016
Location: Cole Harbour
Scleroderma is “a chronic, often progressive autoimmune disease – like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and multiple sclerosis – in which the body’s immune system attacks its own tissues”. There is no cure, so fundraisers like this one are essential to support potentially life-saving research. This is an event that is good for your heart in more ways than one.
Event date: June 18, 2016
What could feel more freeing than running with the fresh, clean sea air blowing through your hair? This event takes place on the beautiful Atlantic View Trail in Lawrencetown featuring non-competitive 2k and 5k events and chip-timed, competitive 5k and 10k events. You can even register to “run from afar” – they will mail you a registration package, including a t-shirt and run along with them from anywhere in the world (just send them a photo afterward!).
Event date: June 25, 2016
Location: Lawrencetown Beach
Taking place in downtown Dartmouth on (you guessed it) Natal Day, this event is one of the oldest road races in North America! And with a registration fee of only $20 it’s also one of the most affordable. Runners of all abilities are welcome and have the choice between a 2-mile or 6-mile race.
Event date: August 1, 2016
The 32nd running of the Rum Runners Relay takes place on the last Saturday of September. The 10-leg staged relay starts in the dark at the Prospect Road Recreation Centre and finishes 12 hours later at the Lunenburg Community Centre!
Event date: September 24, 2016
Location: Halifax to Lunenburg
Don’t wait: Take advantage of the warmest, sunniest period our city has to offer and get outdoors for a fun run near you this spring or summer.
