A Family Visit to Fisherman’s Cove

Fisherman’s Cove is a wonderful 200 year-old fishing village, located 20 minutes from downtown Halifax. With shops, an art gallery, boardwalk, restaurants, a beach to walk on and whale watching cruises, it’s a perfect spot to spend an afternoon with your family.

We like to start our visit with a stroll along the boardwalk. The shops are located in small houses that are painted different colours, just like in many fishing villages. Children love to look at the bright art that is sold and displayed along the boardwalk. There are plenty of spots to purchase souvenirs and the Fisherman’s Cove Gallery has local paintings and prints to enjoy.

Two great restaurants at Fisherman’s Cove are Boondocks and Wharf Wraps. Both have good selections but we love the fish and chips at Wharf Wraps. The sizes are huge and you can share a dish between two people for a small fee. There is a fish tank in Wharf Wraps with a “Nemo” clown fish that children love to watch.

After dinner it’s a great idea to get an ice cream cone and go for a walk along the long boardwalk that extends out into the dunes and the beach. There are fantastic views of Lawlor Island, the ocean, and if you look back of Fisherman’s Cove as well. You can leave the boardwalk and walk on the beach but it’s not safe for swimming.

If you’re adventurous and want to go out on the ocean, charter boats are available for deep-sea fishing, whale watching and tours. During the summer months, you can take a passenger ferry to McNabs Island Provincial Park, to hike 22 kms of trails or visit Fort McNab National Historic Site of Canada.
